CLICK ON THE MONKEY FOR THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK

Homework! It always seems that little brother or sister can't wait for homework, while big brother or sister wishes it would just disappear! Luckily, for most first-graders, this is the first year that they've had homework on a regular basis, and are usually quite excited by it! Homework in first grade is primarily about developing responsibility in our children. They are responsible to bring home the assignment, complete it with a parent's guidance, and then return it. These skills will help to serve the child well later in his/her school life!

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

First graders should spend no more than 10-15 minutes each evening on homework. Our goal is to instill responsibility. increase attention span. and to help your child become a successful reader.  It is understandable that from time to time something comes up to keep you from completing homework tasks.  Please send a note if this happens.  However, this small amount of homework should be given priority as it is very important.  Stronger readers are always the ones who never miss studying their words and practicing their reading!

SEND A NOTE IF YOUR CHILD IS NOT REMEMBERING THEIR BOOK OR WORD LISTS!  REMEMBER PART OF THE HOMEWORK IS LEARNING THE  RESPONSIBILITY TO BRING IT HOME.  I WILL PLACE THE WORD AND SPELLING LISTS ON THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER THAT GOES HOME ON MONDAY AS CHILDREN DO TEND TO FORGET FROM TIME TO TIME. IT CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON THE SIGHT WORD VOCABULARY LINK BELOW.

WHAT IS MY HOMEWORK?

1.  Read a book

2.  Study sight word vocabulary

3.  Spelling words

Assigned homework in first grade is designed to be done with family members.  Besides homework projects that we work on from time to time, our homework is the same each night.

First your child will read a book aloud to a parent or other family member.

Students will study a list of sight word vocabulary from our reading series that is send home at the beginning of each week. These words will be on small flash cards that you can use to play games with your child to help them read these words.  Your child is not responsible for spelling them.

Spelling words will be sent home and tests will be given on Friday.  Your child does need to know how to spell these words.  Spelling grades will not be given on the report card until after Christmas though.

Parents should date, write title of book read, and initial a homework log to indicate what homework activities were completed.  Students are rewarded daily for bringing in their homework.

HOMEWORK IS ASSIGNED ON MONDAY, TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, AND THURSDAY NIGHTS ONLY!
