Students
need to practice their sight words nightly.
This is very important as most words in first and second grade text books
are sight words.
J
Draw pictures to go with
the sight words
J
Build a word bank using
small cards sent home or index cards to practice again and again
J
Practice recognizing
similar and confusing words, such as those beginning with th or wh,
by circling difference in them on word lists and identifying them on flash
cards.
J
You and your child should
look for high frequency words in the books they are reading
J
Say, write and read words
many times to develop automatic recognition
J
Use the analogy approach:
seeing similarities and differences among printed words.
J Make and break word with magnetic letters or letter tiles that can be purchased at Walmart.
J
Group or sort words by
categories or word families
J
Play sight word bingo
- Draw a bingo board with nine squares
Place one of nine words in each of the squares.
Call out words and have your child cover the correct word.
Three in a row is a Bingo.
J
Put your sight words on
index cards to make a card game. Lay
down a card and see if your child can say it before you.
(Count to 5 in your head before you say the word to your child).
Winner has the most cards at the end of the game.
